GTA 6 and Generative AI Porting: Could AI Build a PC Version Before Rockstar Does?

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, with no official PC date. Take-Two says generative AI has “zero part” in how Rockstar made the game. Now a former Rockstar North technical director warns that generative AI could be used to port GTA 6 to PC unofficially, and that the threat could push Rockstar to release its own PC version sooner. Here is what was said, how AI porting would work, what it would cost and why it would be illegal.

Quick answers (updated November 7, 2026)

Does GTA 6 use generative AI? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says generative AI has “zero part” in what Rockstar built. Take-Two does run hundreds of AI pilots elsewhere for testing and productivity.

What is GTA 6 generative AI porting? Using AI coding tools to convert the console version of GTA 6 into a PC version without Rockstar’s involvement.

Who warned about it? Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar North technical director, in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun.

What would it cost? He estimated many hours of machine time and tens of thousands of dollars in AI tokens.

Is it legal? No. An unofficial port would rely on copyrighted code and assets. Vermeij noted Take-Two would have strong legal grounds to act. No working port exists.

The Warning: AI Could Port GTA 6 to PC

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, reported by Dexerto and others, former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij suggested someone could use AI to convert the PS5 version of GTA 6 into a working PC build. The result “won’t be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales,” he said.

His bigger point was strategic. Rockstar has historically released PC versions long after console launches: GTA V reached PC about 18 months after its first console release. If AI makes an unofficial port realistic, waiting that long could cost real money, which might push Rockstar to release its official PC version sooner.

This is a prediction from an experienced developer, not inside knowledge of Rockstar’s plans, and there is no evidence that a working AI port exists.

Take-Two and Generative AI: “Zero Part” in GTA 6

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said plainly that generative AI has “zero part” in what Rockstar Games is building, and that GTA 6 is handcrafted. At the same time, Take-Two runs hundreds of generative AI pilots across the company, using AI for testing and productivity on many internal projects, but not for creative content in Rockstar’s flagship.

That split, AI for tools but humans for content, is becoming the industry norm. We saw the opposite choice in Embark Studios’ use of AI voices in Arc Raiders, which drew a strong reaction from players.

Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has confirmed a PC date. Reports widely point to the first quarter of 2027, but that is unconfirmed.

How Generative AI Porting Would Actually Work

Porting a game means making code written for one machine run on another: different graphics APIs, memory layout, controls, file systems and performance limits. Fan projects have already decompiled older console games by hand and rebuilt them for PC. Generative AI coding agents could speed that up by translating huge amounts of code, writing compatibility layers and fixing errors automatically.

Vermeij’s estimate of tens of thousands of dollars in AI tokens and many hours of machine time shows it would not be trivial, but it is within reach of a determined group. The heavy lifting runs on the same GPU data centers that train AI models; see what those AI data centers cost to build.
