BigBear.ai Stock at $5 a Share: Is BBAI Worth Adding To?

BigBear.ai stock (BBAI) closed at $2.39 on October 9, 2026, less than half the $5.34 it reached on June 1. Is BigBear.ai worth $5 a share, and is it worth adding to an existing interest there? We have an interest in BBAI ourselves and may add at $5, so we worked through the numbers that decide it: what $5 means for the valuation, the $410 million cash pile, the dilution behind it, the October 27 earnings report, and the risks. Everything below comes from the company’s SEC filings and market data, with our opinion clearly labelled.

BigBear.ai Stock Price Today and the Road to $5

Quick answers (prices as of the October 9, 2026 close)

BBAI price: $2.39, down 1.2% on the day, after a new 52-week intraday low of $2.34 on October 8. Getting to $5 needs a 109% gain.

Was it at $5 recently? Yes. BBAI closed at $5.34 on June 1, 2026 and last closed above $5 on June 2 ($5.11). The 52-week high is $9.39.

What $5 would mean: a market cap of about $2.4 billion, or roughly 13 times the midpoint of 2026 revenue guidance after netting off cash.

Next catalyst: third-quarter results on October 27, 2026.

Disclosure: SCR’s founder holds a financial interest and an active position in BBAI, and SCR may add a small open-market stake if the stock reaches $5. Details below.

BigBear.ai Holdings (NYSE: BBAI) sells AI decision-support software to the US defense, intelligence and border-security market, and since its acquisition of Ask Sage it also sells a generative-AI platform built for government users. It is one of the most heavily traded small-cap AI stocks in the United States, which is why the question people actually search for is simple: is BBAI a buy, and what is it worth? This article answers a narrower version of that question, the one we have to answer ourselves as people with an interest in the stock: is it worth adding more if the stock gets back to $5?

The chart explains why $5 is the number. BBAI ran above it for three sessions at the end of May and the start of June, closing at $5.34 on June 1, then lost more than half its value over the summer. It now trades below $2.40, close to the cash and investments it holds plus a modest value for the business itself.

Our Interest, and Why We Would Add at $5, Not Below

Disclosure first. The founder of Strategic Crypto Reserve holds a financial interest and an active position in BigBear.ai, held before this article was written. Strategic Crypto Reserve may add to that interest, through a small open-market purchase on the NYSE, if BBAI trades at $5. We are telling you because you should know about any interest held by people who write about a stock, and because the reasoning behind the $5 level is the most useful part of this analysis.

What this is not. Strategic Crypto Reserve is not making an offer for BigBear.ai, is not planning a tender offer and is not seeking any degree of control. A possible purchase of shares at market prices is all that is being discussed. Nothing on this page is an offer to buy or sell a security, and nothing here is investment advice. Any interest may be increased, reduced or ended at any time without notice.

Why add at $5 rather than at $2.39? It sounds backwards: the stock is cheaper today. But the low price is the market telling you it doubts the growth story. At $2.39, about a third of the market value is cash, and investors are paying only about five times this year’s expected revenue for the business. For BBAI to double back to $5, something real has to change: quarters that land in the upper half of guidance, backlog growing again, and acquisitions that add revenue without flooding the market with new shares.

If the stock gets to $5 for those reasons, adding there means paying more per share for much less uncertainty. If it gets there on hype alone, the numbers in the next two sections say the margin of safety would be gone, and the honest answer would be to wait. For us, $5 is a level that triggers a fresh look at the numbers, not an automatic buy.

What we would want to see before adding at $5: quarterly revenue running at $40 million or more (about a $160 million annual pace), gross margin holding above 30%, backlog back above its March high of $281.9 million, and no large share sale under the newly doubled share authorization.

Disclosure card: SCR founder holds a financial interest and an active position in BBAI and SCR may add a small open-market stake at $5; not a takeover, offer or recommendation

What $5 a Share Means: BBAI Valuation Table

Share prices only mean something next to the share count. BigBear.ai had 479.5 million shares outstanding at June 30, 2026, and about $393 million of net cash ($409.8 million of cash and investments minus $16.6 million of remaining debt). Enterprise value, the market cap minus that net cash, is what investors are really paying for the operating business.

BBAI valuation at four share prices. Revenue multiple uses the $150M midpoint of 2026 guidance ($135M–$165M).
Share priceMarket capEnterprise valueEV / 2026 revenue
$2.39 (Oct 9 close)$1.15 billion$0.75 billion5.0x
$4.00 (Cantor Fitzgerald target)$1.92 billion$1.53 billion10.2x
$5.00 (our add-on level)$2.40 billion$2.00 billion13.4x
$9.39 (52-week high)$4.50 billion$4.11 billion27.4x

How to read it. At $2.39 the business is priced like a slow-growing government contractor. At $5 it is priced like a fast-growing software company, about 13 times revenue, for a company whose revenue grew 13% in the second quarter and which management says is on track for 17% growth this year. Even the analyst target in the table is well below $5: according to MarketBeat, Cantor Fitzgerald cut its target to $4 with a neutral rating, and the consensus rating is “Hold”.

If revenue grows 17% again in 2027, to about $175 million on the guidance midpoint, $5 would be about 11.4 times next year’s revenue. That is still demanding. The case for $5 has to rest on faster growth or on acquisitions, not on the current trajectory alone.

Balance Sheet: $410 Million of Cash, and the Dilution Behind It

The strongest part of the BBAI story is the balance sheet, and it changed a lot in the first half of 2026. From the company’s second-quarter release (filed with the SEC on July 30, 2026):

Cash and investments
$409.8 million at June 30, 2026 (cash $36.3M, short-term investments $282.9M, long-term investments $90.6M)
Debt
$16.6 million, all due within a year, down from $107.0 million at December 31, 2025
Total liabilities
$71.0 million, down from $282.7 million; derivative liabilities fell from $116.9M to $10.5M
Cash burn
$40.2 million used in operations in the first half; $22.2 million in Q2 alone
Q2 2026 results
Revenue $36.7M (+13%), gross margin 32.8% (from 25.0%), net loss $25.7M, adjusted EBITDA −$11.6M
Backlog
$269.6 million, up 9% since December but down from $281.9 million at March 31

What it means for a $5 decision. At about $80 million a year of operating cash burn, the cash pile covers roughly five years, so BigBear.ai does not need to sell shares to survive. That matters, because the other side of the clean-up was dilution: the share count rose from 437.0 million to 479.5 million in six months as convertible debt and related liabilities were settled, and shareholders voted in April 2026 to double the authorized share count to 1 billion. Management has said plainly that the cash is there so that “when the right opportunity presents itself, we can move fast” on acquisitions.

Cash and investments work out to about $0.85 per share. At $2.39 that is 36% of the share price. At $5 it would be 17%. The higher the price, the more of it is a bet on the business rather than on the bank balance.

Risks, and What Could Take BBAI Back to $5

Anyone holding BBAI, or thinking about adding, should weigh these before any price level, including $5:

  1. Dilution. Authorized shares doubled to 1 billion. The company can issue a lot of new stock for acquisitions or capital raises without going back to shareholders.
  2. Losses. BigBear.ai lost $82.5 million in the first half of 2026, and adjusted EBITDA is still negative. Higher SG&A, partly from Ask Sage amortization and proxy costs, offset the gross-margin gain.
  3. Backlog. Backlog fell from $281.9 million to $269.6 million between March and June. Backlog is the best early sign of future revenue for a government contractor.
  4. Contract timing. Revenue depends on US government awards and funding schedules, which can slip from one quarter to the next.
  5. Sentiment and volatility. MarketBeat reports short interest of roughly 31% of the float. That can fuel sharp rallies like the one in late May, and equally sharp falls like the summer slide.

What could take it back to $5. The October 27 third-quarter report is the next test: revenue on pace for the upper half of $135–$165 million, gross margin holding above 30%, backlog growing again, and detail on the “accretive, catalytic M&A” management promised in July. A large defense award or a well-priced acquisition could move the stock quickly. A share sale, a guidance cut or another backlog decline would do the opposite.

Five BBAI risks to weigh before adding at $5: authorized shares doubled, dilution, losses, backlog dip, government contract timing

Why an AI Data Centre Site Covers BigBear.ai

BigBear.ai is a software company, but its gross margin is a compute story. Generative-AI platforms like Ask Sage run on accredited cloud and data centre capacity, and every point of gross margin BigBear.ai gains or loses depends partly on what that compute costs. That is the same cost stack Strategic Crypto Reserve models every day: power price, cooling, GPU class and build cost per megawatt.

If you are looking at AI stocks because you are building or financing capacity yourself, the numbers that matter are on the build side. Our AI Build Configurator prices a site by province or US state, and our data center cost per MW by state page compares all 50 states.

Frequently Asked Questions: BigBear.ai Stock at $5

1. What is BigBear.ai's stock price today?

BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI) closed at $2.39 on Friday, October 9, 2026, down 1.2% on the day, after touching an intraday low of $2.34 on October 8. That is about 55% below its June 1, 2026 close of $5.34 and roughly 75% below the 52-week high of $9.39. Check a live quote before trading: this page is updated by hand.

2. Is BigBear.ai worth $5 a share?

At $5, BigBear.ai would be valued at about $2.4 billion, or roughly $2.0 billion after subtracting about $393 million of net cash, which is about 13 times the midpoint of its 2026 revenue guidance of $135 million to $165 million. That is a growth-stock multiple for a company growing about 13% to 17% a year and still losing money. In our view $5 is justified only if the company shows faster growth, steady gross margins above 30% and backlog rising again, and the October 27 third-quarter report is the first test. This is opinion, not investment advice.

3. When did BBAI last trade at $5?

BBAI closed above $5 on three trading days in 2026: $5.04 on May 29, $5.34 on June 1 and $5.11 on June 2. The intraday high on June 1 was $5.46. The stock then fell steadily through the summer and closed at $2.39 on October 9, 2026.

4. Does Strategic Crypto Reserve have an interest in BigBear.ai?

Yes, in the interest of full disclosure: the founder of Strategic Crypto Reserve holds a financial interest and an active position in BigBear.ai, held before this article was published. SCR may add to that interest, through a small open-market purchase, if BBAI trades at $5. Any interest may be increased, reduced or ended at any time without notice.

5. Is Strategic Crypto Reserve trying to buy or take over BigBear.ai?

No. Strategic Crypto Reserve is not making an offer for BigBear.ai, is not planning a tender offer and is not seeking control of the company. The only plan discussed on this page is a possible small purchase of shares on the New York Stock Exchange, at market prices, if the stock reaches $5. Nothing here is an offer to buy or sell any security.

6. When is BigBear.ai's next earnings report?

BigBear.ai has said it will report third-quarter 2026 results on October 27, 2026. Investors will look for revenue tracking toward the $135 million to $165 million full-year guidance, gross margin holding near the 32.8% reported for the second quarter, a turn in backlog, which slipped to $269.6 million at June 30 from $281.9 million at March 31, and any news on the acquisitions management has said it is preparing for.

7. How much cash does BigBear.ai have?

BigBear.ai reported $409.8 million of total cash and investments at June 30, 2026: $36.3 million in cash, $282.9 million of short-term and $90.6 million of long-term investments. Debt had fallen to $16.6 million, all current, and total liabilities were $71.0 million, down from $282.7 million at the end of 2025. Operating cash burn was $40.2 million in the first half of 2026.
