What's New in AI: Anthropic Files Its S-1, GPT-6.1 Terra, Gemini 4 Carbon and Big Tech's AI Bill
Six stories shaped AI from 19 October to 1 November 2026. Anthropic publicly filed its S-1 to list on Nasdaq as ANT, OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra at half the price, Google unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon for cybersecurity, AI spending pushed Alphabet's free cash flow negative, Microsoft offered buyouts to 60,000 employees, and NVIDIA guided to a $108 billion quarter.
What changed since our last edition
- Anthropic IPO: on 18 October no public S-1 had been filed. It landed on 26 October, with the ticker ANT and the $417 billion compute commitment.
- Google: Gemini 4 Argon opened to everyone on 13 October. Gemini 4 Carbon followed on 28 October, restricted to cyber defenders first. Argon's introductory price still doubles after 30 November.
- OpenAI: two weeks ago it was GPT-Live-1.1 voices and ChatGPT Slides. Now it is GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster computer-use model at half the price.
- Money: the story moved from Anthropic's $16.8 billion quarter to the bill for the build-out, with Alphabet's free cash flow negative and Big Tech capex past $740 billion.
- Jobs: Microsoft's 60,000-person buyout offer is the clearest sign yet that AI budgets are reshaping payrolls.
Anthropic publicly files its S-1 and picks the ticker ANT
Anthropic filed its S-1 registration statement with the SEC on Monday, 26 October 2026, its first public filing after a confidential draft in June. It plans to list Class A shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ANT. The share count and price range were left blank.
The filing confirms an $80.7 billion net loss for the first half of 2026, most of it accounting charges, and roughly $417 billion in future payments owed to compute providers for data centres, chips and cloud services. Press reports say trading could start as soon as 16 November. Our Anthropic IPO tracker and $80 billion loss breakdown are updated with the filing.
OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra at half the price
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026, replacing GPT-5.6 Terra as its mid-tier model. The API price is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, half the cost of the model it replaces, with cached input at $0.05 per million. It is available as gpt-6.1-terra in the API and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for paying plans.
OpenAI says Terra finishes computer-use tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, and it rates the model "Critical" for cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework, the same level as GPT-6 Astra.
Google unveils Gemini 4 Carbon for cybersecurity, but keeps it restricted
Two weeks after opening Gemini 4 Argon to everyone, Google introduced Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October 2026, positioning it for cybersecurity and long-running work. Access is staged: a subset of cyber defenders gets it first, with wider access to follow through Google's Fairwind Program.
Benchmark site Vals AI lists Carbon second of 29 models on its Vals Index at 70.36%. Reported API pricing matches Argon's introductory $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
AI spending hits Big Tech earnings: Alphabet's cash flow turns negative
Third-quarter results showed how expensive the AI build-out has become. Alphabet's capital spending rose to about $51 billion, pushing free cash flow to roughly negative $9 billion for a second straight quarter, and its shares fell about 11%. Microsoft and Meta edged higher, while Amazon slipped.
Across Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, 2026 capital spending is now estimated at more than $740 billion, most of it on data centres, chips and power.
Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees, including in Canada
On 26 October 2026 Microsoft offered voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 eligible employees in participating teams in Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States, at level 70 and below. Employees have until early December to decide and would leave at the end of the year, on terms similar to Microsoft's standard severance.
Reuters reported the offer is meant to contain costs while Microsoft spends heavily on AI. Microsoft had about 223,000 full-time employees as of 30 June 2026.
NVIDIA guides to a $108 billion quarter as AI data centre deals keep coming
NVIDIA has guided to $108 billion in revenue, plus or minus 2%, for its October quarter, with no data centre compute revenue assumed from China. Its results are expected in mid-November. NVIDIA was also reported to be negotiating multi-billion-dollar debt guarantees for Nscale to build a 460-megawatt data centre for Anthropic.
Closer to home, CTV News reported on 16 October that a $10 billion AI data centre could be coming to Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. For the bigger picture, see our Canada AI data centre boom guide.
